I started college last week and i would like to apply for rent allowance. I am in receipt back to education allowance for the duration fo the course. I am unsure about rent all as I own a share of the family home which I will be coming back to at the weekends as I am my sisters legal guardian and she is 18. Mother and Step Father passed away a few years ago. I am a mature student(31). Am I still entitled or is there any point in trying.

Re: Rent Allowence Mature Student

Thanks.. will do. Have to say that I have asked the citizen information about other things and they were not much help.
If anyone has any info on rent allowance can they please give advice.
Thanks

Students in general do not qualify for Rent Supplement, however persons on Back to Education Schemes are allowed to retain any rent supplement they were on while on Jobseeker's payment.

I presume you lived at the family home prior to commencing college, so weren't on Rent Supplement?

You should contact the Community Welfare Officer in the area you're currently living in, and they can advise you on whether you'll qualify or not. You will be means-tested on your share of the family home (it's assessed as Capital or Savings).

Some general information on Rent Supplement may be found here

i have been on btea and got rent allowance, the fact that you are on it almost guarantees you the supplement approval.. the only variable in your case is the fact you are part homeowner.. cant answer that part for you really

one caveat: you will have to get on a local authority housing list before they will even consider it
