In the process of an extension atm. The house is a 4 bed bungalow. I plan on knocking out the kitchen window which is a 2.1m ope and incresing the ope to 3.6m to allow a kitchen join the new dining room. The wall is a cavity wall with 4'' conc blocks etc Inner leaf / outer leaf. What size of RSJ would i require to now support the roof structure etc. Do i require 1 RSJ on top of inner and 1 on top outer leaf or is it possible to have one RSJ to span both? What depth should the RSJ be(4''x6'' or 4'' x 8'') etc? Any comments appreciated.
I also have a bungalow and I have a 3.6m double door opening in the sitting room.I was allowed to use a catnick lintel as the house is not a two storey.
However I would suggest you consult an engineer.I should not cost too much.
The door opening was not knocked, it was included on the house plans. The door is on an external wall.
A catnick is a light steel lintel available from larger hardware shops. My external wall width is 315mm => 100mm inside leaf, 115mm cavity, 100mm outside leaf.If ordering make sure you have the correct external wall width/make-up.
