Is a householder obliged to notify his local council as to which service provider they are using to dispose of their rubbish?

I am presently using the service provider that took over the service from DunLaoghaire Rathdown County Councils own collection service. I have been told that I will continue to be charged a fee until such time as I give them details (proof) that I am using a registered service provider.

I swithced a little while back, the provider I moved to provided a letter with pre-paid envelope to inform the council I was moving. All I had to do was sign it and pop it in the post. Ask the provider you're moving to if they provide the same, otherwise, just write to them yourself letting them know and asking them to remove their bins (but don't hold your breath on this last bit!)

That's interesting Leo. Presumably if you were to move again to another provider next year the same procedure happens again. You have to send a notification to the council every time you switch refuse collectors. Do you know if this is a legal requirement?

I would be interested in comments on the following scenario as well. Can two neighbours or even family members share the same refuse bin for their household rubbish. There would be a saving on the standard charge. In our family we have two blackbins that each, singularily take about 6 weeks to fill because there is so little waste being generated in each house. It would result in a small saving but a saving nonetheless. I assume that you would just phone the council and tell them that you are doing this or would you even have to bother?

The letter I sent to the council was to tell them I'd moved so they could stop billing me and collect their bins. If I was to move again, it'd be the current provider I'd write to, not the council. I'm not aware of any obligation to inform the council of who your provider is.
