Refund of contributions before 1990?

I had an employee pension with L&G for 3 years 4 months that I left in 1989. Could I still cash in this pension or did the rule about being eligible for refund if you contributed for less than 2 years exist in 1989?
Any help would be much appreciated.
 
If you left before 1 June 2002 it was after five years that you could not take a refund...it was changed to two at 1 June 2002 - you should be able to get a refund, did you ask your former employer about it?
