Redundancy: Small Accountancy Office

I've been Working in a small accountants office for the last four years. Within the last few months things have gone slightly pear shaped.

Since my boss passed away my bosses family are running the company. They've brought in another accountant who promised that he would make sure that the staff would be looked after.

Four months on & nothing has changed. We're in Limbo. There's only 2 of us in the office, one an accounting technician & an office administrator. We're both in our early 20's and for the last 4 months we've been managing the office, it's extra stress on us and neither of us know what to do about it.

We don't know if this accountant will buy the practise or if he will even offer us a job and even if he does neither of us are interested in working for him. We just want to know if we are entitled to redundancy or should we just cut our losses & move on?

Would really love to hear others views on this matter!!!!!

You should just move on.

With 4 years' experience, you won't have any difficulty getting a job. It's up to the new guy to sort things out. You may have a loyalty to clients, but put your career first.

I wouldn't worry about getting redundancy. With 4 years' experience, you would only get 9 weeks' pay or a max of €5400. It would be nice, but it's not worth putting your career on hold for.

Thanx. I have so many people telling me different things at the moment I don't know if I'm coming or going....I'm just feeling very used and stressed.

That's not a healthy place to be. If you check the newspapers / accountancy ireland etc you will see a glut of accountancy jobs. Definitely move on plus if you know someone in a big accountancy firm ask them to refer you and you can split the finding fee (normally a couple of grand!).

Only thing is this has kinda put me off working in an accountants practise. I was approached by a rather large accounting firm there before Christmas, I was invited for a no obligation interview/chat and that they currently have excellent opportunities in both Reception/Administration. The only problem is I don't have the time for meetings because I'm so bogged down with work plus the practise is too far for me.

What are you still doing there?????? Don't know much about the redundancy end of it but someone with your experience could walk in to another job. Make time for interviews/meetings!!

If you have decided that whatever happens you are likely to leave anyway then you should start making plans to do so as advised above. If there is actually any chance that you might stay on then perhaps you should try to raise your concerns/issues with the new boss and discuss them openly. Maybe they can be resolved to the satisfaction of all concerned?

Great news....I've been offered redunancy pay. The practise will officially finish up in March & I've been offered a great package. So I'm really happy!!! Thanx to everyone for their comments they're much appreciated.
