If they are unemployed for a period of time after being made redundant then they should file a Form P50 with Revenue:

Form P50 - First Claim for Repayment During Unemployment

to claim back overpayments of tax that arise due to tax credits accumulating unused. At the end of the year they wight want to request a P21 balancing statement to make sure that there was no under or over payment of tax during the year. See here for an example of somebody who thought that they were on top of things and up to date but received a surprising tax refund windfall anyway...

If your friend received a redundancy payment, and paid tax on it, then top-slicing relief may also kick in. It is covered in previous threads.
