Reducing the lawn area that needs to be cut.

An elderly relative has a house about 1 mile from the coast in Donegal and the soil has a lot of peat in it. The lawn area needs to be reduced to lessen the amount of work cutting grass. What would you recommend to plant in the area that is going to be removed ? Trees would not be suitable as they would grow too big and shade the house. Thanks for any replies.
 
make triple sure that the new plant(s) are frost proof and of course suitable for coastal areas. Ask in a few garden centers what they recommend.
