My employer put us on reduced hours at the start of the year due to the current climate.

We agreed to it as we were promised our full time hours back after six months.

However two months down the line, they want half the work force to cut down from Full-time to part-time contracts for good.

According to them, this is in order to remain competitive and viable in the industry.

We were also told that if we do not agree to this proposal, then they would be looking for redundancies on "last in first out basis" and then they would employ new staff on a part-time basis.

I believe the company is taking advantage of the current climate as they are not in any real trouble.

My question is :

(1) Do they have the right to change full-time contracts to part-time?

(2) Can they really make staff redundant and then employ new staff to replace them?

(3) What can we do to protect our jobs?

Union not very helpful. They are basiclly doing Nothing.
Don't let them away with this. You've been paying your subs for years (presumably) and now you need their support. Do what it takes to get the union engaged and active.
