Recommended tiles for kitchen floor

Hi,

We're getting tiles for our kitchen floor and I was wondering what yer opinions are? We currently have linoleum. We've been to a few tileries and it seems the main options are ceramic, porcelain and polished porcelain.

We're looking for tiles that are easy to keep clean, good for wear and tear, not slippy and good quality. What would ye recommend?

we have polished porcelain tiles in our kitchen. Cream/off white colour.Lovely tile but Absolute nightmare to keep clean!

My advice is to stay away from light coloured tiles on a kitchen floor-particualrly if there is access to back garden or if you have cat/dog.
 
+1 I would avoid polished porcelain.

Depending on your colour scheme, dark greyish-blue/slate tiles can look really nice.

Avoid any light-coloured tiles with grooves in them as the grooves are great muck collectors.
 
I'd agree with the above as well, light coloured highly polished floor tiles will show every little piece of dirt. Slate works really well as long as there's a little texture and variety to the surface finish. Otherwise, go with a tile with a fleck or some colour variation through it.

Haha, just taken out our black porcelain tiles, nightmare also to keep clean! and replaced them with cream...aghhh.....! (unpolished)

But, went to global tiles just this side of Newry, and by god do the give good prices compared to south of the boarder, even after he had totted it all up, and the tiles were already on special price, he then gave me them pound for euro, and discounted nearly 50% off adhesive, grout, sealer and free delivery!

Most impressed, it worked out nearly half price from the quotes I got south of the boarder

When I get around to pulling up my kitchen tiles I'll be putting down [broken link removed] which is laminate with tile effect . . saw it in B&Q and it looks spot on, easy to install, hard wearing etc.

Maybe so. It looks grand in the shop. I'm thinking, handy price, easy - no mess - DIY installation, and easy to replace if desired. It's far from fancy tiles I was reared, lino was the job when i was a lad .
 
I'd use HUGE ceramic tiles. The biggest you can find. This is to avoid having to clean the grout so often, or at least, not to have to clean so many "in-between-lines"

Mine are ceramic and cream (yeah, I agree, it should be darker) from right price tiles. Apart from the colour, they're perfect because they have a texture and the dirt doesn't show as much as it would with polished porcelaine, so I can afford washing them once a week (in fairness, we're hardly at home).
 
My parents had lino and took it up to be replaced with cream tiles - big mistake. They have my mother driven demented trying to keep them clean. I have an open plan kitchen living area and used a hard wearing laminated wood flooring and can't fault it. It can be hoovered and washed now and again with a lightly damp mop.
