I spent the afternoon doing my mum's med 1 (how we didn't fall out, I don't know).
She had a hip replacement last year and had a lot of expenses, but we figured this out. Luckily a lot was paid via VHI.
It was only going to fill out the form that the number of boxes on the Med 1 were one box short of that on her P60 for her PPS number. Apparently years ago when you got married your number was changed for that of your husband and a 'W' added to the end of it, so her PPS number is too long for the form.
We looked into her P21s for the last few years and my dad got the tax relief although he is only in receipt of OAP payments - so Mum's been filling out the forms but my dad gets the benefit even though he doesn't actually pay tax (he is retired but mum isn't).
Asked my dad and he got a cheque from mum's expenses (it seems) but he just assumed it was a refund due to him (from where?) and spent it.
Is there someone that we can literally go to talk to about this? We have all the documentation.
BTW, parents are separately assessed.
