I am involved in fundraising for a charity and a private organisation is donating money to a media outlet to do a tv show on the charity i have asked why is the donation not been given to the charity directly as to me a media outlet are profit making. I am not getting straight answers i feel something is not right the charity i fundraiser for has a board and i want to raise it with them but not sure what my grounds are other than a feeling that something does not seem right
 
A donation implies that they don't derive a benefit.

Perhaps the charity has decided that instead of taking a "donation" which has to be spent on a particular item that the "donor" should pay the money directly to the media company with the charity's permission to do the programme.

Also remember if the charity incurs a cost it can't recover VAT the "donor" may be able to recover the VAT.
 
Can I enquire if anyone can advise the rational behind why the donation must not confer any benefit on the donor?

e.g. If someone gets their bags packed at a supermarket or their car washed at a fundraiser does this not meet the definition of a donation as it seems they are receiving a benefit?


I appreciate there may be a spectrum of such activities so, further along that scale, does the money raised through the recent Architects event count as donations (http://www.simonopendoor.ie/)?

If so, and a donation in excess of €250 was made, would it be liable for tax relief for the Charity?
