Question about probationary period

Hi,

My girlfriend has just been offered a promotion at work. It is a temporary 6 month promotion to cover maternity leave. Her employer says she will need to complete a 3 month probationary period, even though the position is only for 6 months.
They want to withhold her pay raise for the first 3 months and then pay it back to her as a lump sum after her probation. They have told her that this is standard practice but to be honest I've never heard of it.

I really need some advice on this.

Is it normal to have to complete a probationary period even though she served one already when she started in this company and the position is only for 6 months?

Has anyone ever heard of withholding a pay rise during a probationary period?

Thanks in advance,
K

Sounds odd to me. If the new role its only for 6 months , then I don't see the point of a "probation period" at all :).
It would only apply to the new role.

She will already have rights if she has been there for a year and passed her original probabtion.

The salary thing sounds odd too.
I've never heard of it either.
Sounds to me like they will try and avoid paying her an increase.
Is it a small company ?

It depends on the company you work for. I work for a large multi-national and for a short term acting up like in this case, we often would not pay a payrise, rather it would be seen as a developement opportunity for the individual concenrned. Likewise we would never pay a pay rise immediatley on a normal promotion in case the individual proves not to be up to the role, normally it would only be paid after a number of months and would be subject to performance

I would say that the probationary period is acceptable seeing as she will be doing a job she hasnt done before...for example going from Deputy Manager to Manager...very similar role but not the same job! the fact that she will not get the pay until the probationary period is over seems extreme but if she gets it in a lump sum once the period is completed then i dont see the probles. One advice i would give would be for her to get this agreement in writing.

seems odd but my situation is even more strange. I temporarily went into a position in work last September(2008) for 6 months to start while the person I took over from was put into a different role. Things just went on until this August when they advertised the position in house(company rules they had to). I got the position. Ive been in this role now for 13 months but they want me to still do a 6 month probation period. Surely there is no sense in this(especially seeing as they told me that I was doing an excellent job and that in reality they hadnt considered any one else for the role).
