Question About Declaration of Shares

Hi,

I'm sure this is the stupidest question you've heard in a long time, but help me out anyway. I have a number of shares, none of which have ever paid me any dividends, and are unlikely to for a very long time. Nor have I sold any of them or realized any profit (and technically, of course, no loss) of any kind. The shares have plummetted and I'm just sitting on them hoping for a return in the dim and distant. In short, I haven't made a penny on them. Now, I realize I'm not liable for any tax on them, obviously, but with the end of October approaching, can anybody tell me if I am required to make any kind of declaration to the Revenue that I actually have them, even though I've realized nothing on them, or am I required to do nothing at all until they either return a dividend or I sell them?

Hi Wren

There is a section on Form 11 for CGT where you note any assets you bought during the year and the price you paid for them.

You should give the information now and note it on the front page that you had not been aware of your obligation to declare them. I don't think the Revenue will be too upset by it.
