Hi, had an attic tank burst friday, insurance co sent out adjuster this morning, the insurance co also recommended a builder, had the builder come over just there now, but not same time as adjuster was here. The builder just wanted to no what the loss adjuster said and vice versa. Told not to worry, blah blah, but the builder has not given me any hint of what he thinks should be repaired or the likely cost, just that he will talk to loss adjuster, is this the normal procedure and am i just been crazy, am i wrong to think the builder is working for me and should be telling me what needs to be done. Or can someone please settle the warning bells in my head that this is the standard procedure for dealing with an incident like this. I am very worried and not sure where to turn.

you are right to have alarm bells ringing. You should be getting quotes from 3 different builders. I have a kitchen company and dealt with the customers who had the damage not the insurance. I have supplied witten quotes in these instances. I have a sneaky suspicion the adjustor and builder have an 'arrangement'.

some insurance companies have gone down the route of reinstatement (as opposed to writing cheques) which is their entitlement.

you should ask the adjuster if they are reinstating the works or simply getting a quote.

If they are getting a quote get a local builder to quote for you as a guide.

All the insurance company has to do is settle on the basis of the cost as quoted from a reputable builder for the works and this is usually what they use their own builders for. Their builders are usually slightly cheaper than the general builders as they get alot of work this way and dont want to loose it.

You could always appoint a loss assessor on your behalf but this does not always work out financially viable for the policy holder depending on the size of the claim.

thanks for replies. will they give me a written breakdown of what work they will do before starting the job, and do i need to get some sort of certificate to say work is completed when they are finished, should mould occur say in years to come? How many days should i leave it before hounding the adjuster ?
