Hi there,
Just wondering if anybody has installed sliding doors between 2 rooms (living and dining room) and whether they were able to use normal/standard doors modified to sliding doors using the rails ect. or is there a better option out there specificially companies selling sliding doors ect. .

Thanks,

Standard doors can be used, the problem is concealing the sliding gear and getting an airtight finish.
Most solutions are top hung only as folk dont want a track on the floor, so draught under door.

These folks are a good starting point for the gear

What some folk do is build a false partition behind which the doors slide when open, this partition can extend across the top and hide the rail

thank you very much, that info is very helpful and clarifies a lot for me. thanks again.

maybe of no help but we had wanted to put double sliding doors between kitchen and sunroom but instead we had to/went for double doors that fold back out onto the side panels against the sunroom walls. We went with full length glass side panels, overhead screens/fanlights and full glass doors (we'v young children and so were worried but never a problem with full glass outside sticky fingers now and again).

As it happens we never open one door and the other door remains slightly ajar. Got whole unit made in Lohans in Galway City, who I would certainly recommend for quality and keeping to deadlines etc.

I can email u pictures if any help etc.

Thank you:)

One of the advantages of the false partition is that it can be used to fix the rail to so the load is vertical as opposed to hanging off angle brackets

Be careful about the gap between the false partition and the door, particularly if the door has recessed panels or mouldings.

Think about little fingers and door action.

Hi guys, thanks very much for all the help and tips. It has all been very informative and makes a lot more sense to me today as I went looking at doors in 3 more showrooms today. I now need to decide now on actual door, I am considering Deanta or Doras Oak at the moment.

One final query, I have received a quote to hang the 2 doors, including rail, handles locks removing partition wall and any re-plastering for 300.00. Still trying to get a few more quotes but guys postponing on me .... Hopefully they will come over next few days.

What would you think of the quote ?

Many thanks,
H

€300 for that ,obviously without seeing it, sounds a little cheap to me

I'd tend to agree, especially if they are using a licensed waster disposal operative to dispose of the plaster - its got sulphur in it IIRC, it cannot just be "dumped".

Thanks for the feedback on the quote and I will note the points raised.

I am due to get another few quotes over the next few days & these are some things I will ask the tradesman.

I know with the first guy I said I would supply doors and architraves, and perhaps he has omitted to include some of the spec in his quote in error ..... and I have it wrong ?

Thanks guys for your help.
