Public Service Post: recent clerical posts for galway and clare

Just in case anyone is interested and a quick question.......

the recent clerical posts for galway and clare.....the galway applications amounted to 1200 applications for around 20 posts.

didnt ask about the clare posts.

the odds seem pretty low of landing a place. competition is fairly high. (Edited)

apart from studying the given sample tests on the public appointments site, is there any other books, sites or literature that someone could study to improve their chances?

any hints would be appreciated.....

How do you figure that the odds of landing position are high?

Kilter, check the public jobs website, it will have examples of the preparatory material.

Also, don't be put off by the numbers going for the exam. Generally, people with secretarial/office courses apply for CO jobs (with the exception of a few ppl like myself who want less stress). These are mainly people who got a pass leaving cert, maybe a few honours who didn't go to college. Therefore the standard of applicants is lower than the standard applying for the Executive Officer, Third Secretary. I think that if you are reasonably intelligent & have a degree, you should have a good chance of being placed in the top 20 anyway. Go and do the exam & worry about the rest later.

Have the test on Friday week, does anyone know if the positions are temporary/contract/permanent? It didn't say on the website.

I did the dublin one last year and if I recall right, I wished I had practised say hours and minutes - like the question they asked about a train leaving a station, working out how long for stops, etc. Just really brush up a little of taking hours and minutes away! Also there was another one about travel expeneses - involving working out rates and distances etc. Really not at all hard but more may take a little time to think about if you have been too calculator/computer dependent rather than using the grey matter!! Above all don't waste time trying to work out ones that seem to be tough for you - move on immediately to next one and come back if time allows. I found the time given very short for the number to answer but still passed them well. Read ever so carefully and you can ask for clarification if you draw a blank - I did! Best of luck with it!
