Public job (working for a public Hospital) - maternity benefit

Hi All,

Just quick question - are you entitled to maternity pay (full pay) when you are working for a public Hospital. Also, do you have to be there a certain lenght of time?

If you mean top up on top of the standard State maternity benefit, to my knowledge, no civil servants get it.

what do you mean civil servants don't get a top up on maternity benefit? Civil/public servants are nearly the only ones that do - private sector people have to fight for it.OP- Check terms and conditions of employment/contract/maternity leave policy

What does your contract of employment say?
Ask your HR department?

Yes i mean do they 'top-up' your wages for maternity benefit?

I haven't got a job with them yet - at interview stages and obviously not a question I would like to ask them directly. But I would like to know, so if I got offered a job there at least I would know whether to take it or not.

The public hospitals pay full basic wages during mat leave. It is one of the reasons wages are high in the public sector(not all of them).

An amount is deducted to take into acccount the social welfare payment. There is no qualifying period.

Don't ask anything about pay in the interview. HR will also answer those kind of questions before hand if you want to ring them. The interview board is likely to just tell you to do that as they would be afraid they woudl say the wrong thing.

Terms must vary in the public service so, I have worked in varous local/central govt deps and NGOs linked to civil service terms and maternity top up has never been available.
 
i work for local government and i'm entitled to it, my sister works in civil service govermnent dept and so is she, ngos are non government orgs so not civil/public servants.
 
I know of a public sector organisation which pays top up maternity to some employees but not to others. It depends and the T&C's of the contract of employment.

I know of private hospital employees who get 90% top up maternity.

Seems curious, particularly in the public sector, where there may well be equal status policies in place. Any idea what qualifies a person for top-ups? Would it be seniority, or service or what?
 
In this particular case the default position is no top up maternity. However the company has had difficulty recruiting and retaining certain key professionals. The T&C's of these individuals would include 100% maternity top up in their contract of employment.

There may well be equal status policies in the Public Service but in the much broader Public Sector custom and practice will differ.

In the case of the OP, would you be employed by the HSE or some agency? Not all workers in public hospitals are employed by the HSE and enjoy HSE terms and conditions.
