Legislation is being introduced to ensure that those on the Pandemic Unemployment Payment or Wage Subsidy Scheme are allocated a full paid PRSI contribution. This is very welcome, and will avoid issues with short term entitlement to Jobseekers/Illness/Maternity Benefit payments over the coming months and years. It will also ensure contribute to the minimum 10 year requirement for the Old Age pension.

Draft law to allow those on PUP safeguard entitlements

The Government has approved the drafting of new legislation that will allow those receiving the Pandemic Unemployment Payment to have access to Social Insurance Benefits in order to safeguard their future welfare entitlements.

COVID-19 Pandemic Unemployment Payment (PUP)

The COVID-19 Pandemic Unemployment Payment was for employees and self-employed people who had lost employment during the COVID-19 public health emergency.

Temporary Wage Subsidy Scheme

The Temporary Wage Subsidy Scheme allowed employers to continue to pay their employees during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was replaced by the Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme.

Employees continued to be covered by social insurance while their employer was getting a subsidy. Their PRSI entitlements was not broken and they continued to get insurable weeks or credited social insurance contributions.
