A friend of mine is self employed and has recently turned 66. He says that once he has reached that age he will not have to pay the self employed PRSI on his non pension earnings. I think he is wrong but can someone please clarify

Individuals 66 or over are not liable to PRSI. They remain liable to the health levy until they turn 70 (or have a medical card).

I am surprised that the tax man gives up an opportunity for screwing more tax out of people but Thank you for clarification

I think the logic is (if there is one) that the individual is no longer contributing towards State pension as they have reached retirement age.

At 66 he is entitled ( subject to qualifying) to apply for state pension. Once a person becomes entitled to state pension you do not continue paying in on any other earnings.
