Protecting naked equity positions

Having got burnt in Anglo Irish I've learnt the value of trying to avoid naked equity positions. If I was to take a 12 month view on one of the remaining banks and want to take an equity position what hedging options are available to give some protection to the initial capital invested?

The ideal would be to buy a put option at the price I buy in at however I can't find anyone on the net making a market on puts/calls on Irish equities, is it because the market is too small?

Is an alternative to open a futures contract? Are futures contracts on individual Irish equities available?
