Protecting a stone fireplace?

HI all,

Just bought a limestone fireplace. Its natural colour. We've a 2 year old who loves pens, markers and basically anything else that makes a mess. Is there anything we can put on the fireplace to protect it. I'm thinking like scotchgarding a couch?
Any suggestions welcome. We learnt an expensive lesson with a cream fabric couch. Bought just before I got pregnant. Its in bits!!
