Recently (January) my company introduced some cost cutting measures and they also annouced a pay freeze company wide as a result of the 'global recession' blah blah blah
However, in May 2008 I got a promotion and at the time I was informed (verbally) that I would receive an increase to my salary at the next pay review which was supposed to be in January.
I understand that companys are entitled to introduce cost cutting measures and pay freezes, but surely if I am now doing a job with extra work and additional responsiblities - I am entitled to a pay rise - regardless of the pay freeze situation???
all very much depends on the company - when my other half got promotion within company actually took a salary decrease. The new job with added responsibilities with better prospects long term though. The operators in the company are unionised and get all the cost of living increases, etc whereas management get only what the company feels like giving them. In last 2 years hasn't had increase at all and doesn't look like getting one this year either.
I recently got a small promotion there before Christmas (I work in a software company). Got extra responsibilities, more hassle etc etc. I did not get any extra salary. Will not get a bonus this year either.
Am I pi**ed off? Hmmmm kinda....but I also consider myself lucky to have a job at the moment.
You can also look at the opportunity to develop your career and skills so if and when you move on you will be better placed for a increase. It also looks good on a CV. that the company promoted you.
