Promoting - turning it down - am I mad?

I have been offered a promotion - worth about €4,500 per year - but I am probably going to turn it down on Monday. Am I mad in this current climate?

I feel as if I've reached a comfortable place in my career, I'm just concerned about family and friends, and enjoying life. I feel the extra responsibility isn't worth it. Perhaps I've lost the go in life. I am also put down a deposit on a small shop business, which will hopefully go through around April time - so feel I have enough on my plate.

Some of my friends say take the promotion, and I will be more secure if the shop doesn't take off for a while - but I'm leaning towards not taking it.

Any thoughts welcome.

hey elainem,
You have to go with your gut on this one. My own experience was I applied for one promotion a few years ago got offered an even higher position than I had originally applied for. Tossed and turned over the decision, took the job, totally regretted it as i wasn't ready for the position or responsibility. Quit the job after a year in middle of recession as I couldn't bear getting up to go to work (I had previously really enjoyed the place and had very good friends in the company).

You mention the money which I think is important to consider, figure out exactly how much you will come out with after tax into your hand per month and ask if the increased work/responsibility is worth it.

I know I'm throwing cold water on the idea but just ask yourself can you do the job? Do you want to do the job?

There are particular kinds of people suited to management. You appear to be one of those e.g. opening your own shop. It appears to me you are a "go ahead" person and will not be working for your employer for too long more. If you see this to be the case perhaps you would be better off refusing the offer.

On the other hand, look around at your colleagues. Are any of them as capable as you? Depending on the performance of your shop this promotion could be a good retreat base if things go pear-shape.

Take the promotion, I think you're worth it.

If I recall correctly your current position has insecure funding, in which case if the promotion is to a position with more security you should take it.
