Problems viewing some web pages

I seem to have a problem viewing a large amount of random web pages, sometimes ones that I know the address of, other times ones I find on Google etc. The web browser just directs me back to google and says it can't find the site. Its not happening to all sites (obviously :)) but enough that it becomes annoying when researching for online studies.

It seems to tie in with a clean up I did on my laptop last night. I ran a few scans (which found very little) and then went into Internet Options under Tools and Recent Internet History and deleted all.

Any suggestions as to what I've done?
 
From what I can read it looks to be something to do with security settings in Internet Explorer 6/7 where some SSL-secured web pages and web sited will not work correctly. I haven't this recently but by deleting the temporary internet files that I had stored it may be now there are being blocked.

I am going to try and load Firefox and see if the issue remains.
