Can anyone advise what qualifies as a primary degree with regard to qualifying to enter teacher training as a mature student. I am qualified to Nat. Diploma level only and work in the construction industry but really considering changing careers to teaching.

Thanks for any help

[Primary Teaching] Are you thinking of doing the 18 month post grad course or are you planning on doing the B.Ed. degree as a mature student ? If doing the latter you do not need primary degree. If doing the former B.A,B.Sc or business degree. Have you got grade C in Higher level Irish in Leaving Cert? Its usually a requirement.

You need a Level 8 degree even if it's a Pass BA/BSc Hons. You have a Level 7, you need to up-grade this the OU could help you to do this.

If you are aiming for Secondary, you have the whole issue of your degree relating to a curriculum subject, see Teaching Council website - Getting onto a PGDE is very tough, currently points for subbing help your application, but not sure if subbing will be allowed soon once Teaching Council gets it's teeth into the whole 'unqualifieds' in the classroom issue.

Primary is more flexible re subject, but you have the whole Irish issue and the need to show demonsrable interest in kids and teaching as a career e.g hobbies, voluntary work etc.
