Pop into Halfords, purchased leisure battery off them last yr for campervan..excellent service and local garage had spun me a story about cost of ordering it in and fitting it etc.
Just be careful that your car radio doesn't need a code after the battery is changed.

Hello mathepac,I had the same battery from new in my Skoda 1.9 TDi 2004, that's 11.5 years in a diesel. It failed in the middle of the frost last winter, wouldn't hold charge. A decent replacement cost €90, DIY install, 3 bolts and a bit of battery cover disassembly. 15 minutes work, re-code stereo.
Does your existing battery simply need electrolyte or does the alternator belt need tightening / replacing? If the battery is a Japanese one UASA or whatever it is unlikely to have failed. Who diagnosed the problem as battery failure? In general the only specialist batteries are for diesels which require higher turning power than those used in petrol-engined cars.
I've never heard of a belt being lubricated, surely this would degrade the belt?the alternator belt needed lubrication
Thanks everyone. I'm going along to a Fastfit place in the next few days. Now that you say it vandriver, what is belt lubricating? Maybe he meant lubrication of wheels or pulleys. I'm a reasonably alert customer but a garage could spin any old yarn and I wouldn't know any better!I've never heard of a belt being lubricated, surely this would degrade the belt?
Thanks for that Leo. I'll have a look.Take a look at the car battery FAQ on how to test the battery to see if it is near end of life.
If you are absolutely sure about your recollection of the conversation, then it is all lies, nonsense that belies belief from a professional main-dealer not to mind a back-street mechanic.... They said that, having checked it, the alternator belt needed lubrication and the battery needed replacement. It was 'a special battery', so it would be expensive.
All nonsense. Never go back there again other than to tell them their lies have been exposed. Feel free to quote me.... It was 'a special battery', so it would be expensive. I took their word for it. Maybe I should go somewhere else for a second opinion.
