Price of Blocklayer

Hello,

I will be starting a self build in the next few months. It is for a 2,500 Sq Ft story and a half in Clare.

I am shopping around for builders at the moment and have priced a few block layers. Does anyone have an idea of how much this should cost ? It will take approx 6000 blocks from what I can estimate. I hear lads talk about getting blocklayers for 60c and 70c a block but would that include extra's like fitting of DPC, Insulation etc.

I have got a quote from a local blocklayer of €7,700 (+VAT) who would start once the foundations and floors have been poured. Included in this price is fitting of DPC, Insulation, window cills, lintels, chimneys and all blockwork up to roof level. He will have his own mixer and scaffolding also. Can you let me know what you think of this price ???

The guy is very good at what he does and is reliable...but sometimes has a reputation for not been the cheapest in the world. I am not sure what to make of the price though given the current climate, especially when , as I said, hear people talking about blocklayers doing it for 60-70 a block. Any thoughts/advice would be much appreciated. I have got the price down as much as I can, he isn't willing to budge any further.
 
I'm in the building trade, not a blocklayer but I sub them in. My advice, don't go near anyone quoting you less than a euro. You pay for quality.I still pay E1.10 to E1.20 per block which I still consider cheap even though I could potentially make more from the cheaper guys but I know from experience it'd end up costing more in the long run. If the guy has a good reputation go with him. Badly laid blocks will make it more expensive to plaster, roof, tile, fit kitchens.... the list goes on!
 
I paid around €1.05 a block about 8 months ago and that includes DPC etc all extras.
 
I was talking to a guy recently who had blocklayers lined up for 30c a block!
It was in Offaly
 
The saying "you get what you pay for" is still so true. Paid €1.10 in Mayo just recenlty and had no real problems with blocklayer but saying that a friend of mine has a blocklayer for €0.90 across the road from our site and that guy is very reliable too. He even works in the rain and up until and including Saturday afternoons. You just can't beat good referrals either though.
 

Hi, i would suggest that is a very reasonable price indeed, given the fact you know his work, and he is supplying scaffolding.
 
if this guy has a good rep,and will do everthing,then it sounds more than fair,how much is scaffolding going too cost you too rent,and this guy supplies his own,thats money saved straight away.as kristian said good referals are the only way too go,from experience.you could not possibly get a good brickie for under 80 cent a block,you pay for quality.
 
Not the best idea to lay blocks whilst raining - the muck will run and the rain will weaken the mix.
