Anybody know the price of a ton of turf these days? I've a 4 ton load of Midlands turf coming to Lough Mask for 500 euros ( a valient but completely futileattempt to get it stacked for this price) is this a good price?

I reckon that sounds likea good price. I would have to 'see' the 4 ton first though !
What is that in 10-10-20 bags ?

Is there no decent bog around Lough Mask ? I know several bog-filled sponges of mountains to the west of Lough Mask.

Hurray! Free fuel, there for the taking! Shure, what good is a piece of oul bog anyway? Just a load of stupid insects, birds and rare plants - fat lot of good they are in cutting your fuel bills...

Around 100 of the 40kg coal bags - I think the 10-10-20 bags are the same size.

In that case, €500 is probably a bit steep for 100 bags but the price of turf is rising. I would say €400 is a fairer price but then again, you are carting it from the midlands so that must add costs.

TBH I wouldn't know whether it's dear or cheap because it's all relative. To make any sense of the price you would have to compare it to the likes of coal or wood that you could burn as an alternative in an open fire/ stove. 4 ton of coal would probably cost you €1300. If the turf gives out the same heat as the equivalent in coal then the turf is good value but if you need to use 2.6 times the amount of turf compared to coal to generate the same heat then it's not particularly good value.

At last a topic I can contribute to! A the value of a ton of turf is like asking what lenght is a piece of string. It depends on quality, whether black (good) or brown (poor). Also depend on its dry matter content, most turf this year is poor as it was difficult to dry. Buy a few bags first and compare heat output to coal or briquettes and work it out from there. Poor quality damp turf will also damage flues etc.

Wow thank you one and all. The turf delivery is today so I'll know more about the 'value' of the turf when I see it. So far as I know it's dry and black. My farmer/neighbour recommended the turf-man to me as he's known him for years. He knows I live on a very tight budget so he wouldn't do me wrong.....never-the-less (as he must tow the truck up my steep road with his tractor) he will be here to help me barter the price down 50 euros or so.

The problem was my timing as most folks have already sold their turf and the demand this year has nearly doubled from last year. Four ton should last me 2 winter seasons ( I hope). The Stanley stove heats the rads in three of the 'main' rooms and the 'towel-holders' in all three bathrooms.
Next year I will try to secure my own turf-bog...lot's of it around here. Successful country living is all about timing and long term planning. But I MAY convert to a pellet stove and a pellet fireplace insert....much better value and cleaner....the amount of ash from turf is heartbreaking!

Also is wood pellet is a renewable source and doesn't destroy one of the world's most unique habitats...
