Pregnant - Unemployable?

Hi everyone,

Just a question, I’m 5 months pregnant at the moment, and my job isn’t looking like it’s going to last any more than a couple of weeks as the company is laying off a lot of people. In my current situation (Being pregnant), what’s the likihood of anyone hiring me for temp work etc over the next few months?

Any comments appreciated!
 
I can't think of any reason why you shouldn't be able to get temp work. You could try [broken link removed]
 
I have no contract, In this employment for 1 year, and nothing has been said to me yet, but the company is in a lot of financial difficulty, and I can see them having to possibly close. As I say nothing is certain, but just just curious if I could pickup another temporary job if needs be?

I know you can't legally be refused employment just for being pregnant, but from experience, I know previous bosses I had would not hire a pregnant person.
 
I had no difficulty over 20 years ago getting temporary employment whilst (heavily!) pregnant; most annoyingly very early in my pregnancy a permanent job offer was withdrawn as soon as I mentioned it - at least that (one hopes!) couldn't happen today.

I can't see it being a problem getting temp work whilst being pregnant. If anyone (e.g. agencies) suggest otherwise tell them you are pregnant not sick!

temp work should not be problem.

full-time permanent work....well the potential employers are hardly likely to tell you that they are not hiring you because you are pregnant now are they? more likely they will say "there were better candidates yada yada yada...." of course people will think otherwise.

i could see why they would be reluctent to hire a pregnany woman. a lot of time, money, possibly training etc would be taken up. that said, i do not agree with such a practice. being pregnant should not be an obstacle.
 
Completely correct.
Mind you, if you were a small company it becomes economically unviable to hire someone who is pregant in a permanent role, as even if you don't pay maternity pay, you still need to keep the persons job open, as well as having to get someone to fill the maternity leave position.
Not very attractive for an employer.
No matter what legislation is introduced this will still just continue however (in the private sector) as it's very hard to prove discrimination as there can always be 'a better candidate'..
 
Thanks for all your replies - they've been interesting! I know realistcally, a permenent role is not an option, and I can see the point for this, so I will see what comes about with a temporary role!

It's really important to make sure you have enough PRSI contributions to qualify for Maternity benefit,an example of one such criteria being: as an employee, at least 39 weeks PRSI paid in the 12 month period before the first day of your maternity leave (more categories on the below link).

Lone parents get more than enough in the line of stereotypes, put-downs and incorrect assumptions; we really don't need any more of this trash perpetuated.

Paddyodoors - I don't see how you managed to misread my post, it's quite obvious I was referring to something that happened 20 years ago.

Not as offended as I am by your comment. The OP has made no reference to being a lone parent - have you made an incorrect assumption?

As for trash being perpetrated, have you read the story linked in the other thread? How many stereotypes has she fulfilled? A nurse, Copper Face Jacks, a one night stand, doesn't even have his name etc. And to top of all off she goes on the national airwaves?
 
It is myself I am referring to as being a lone parent, I have made no such assumption or statement in regards to the OP.

That I am a lone parent is well known both on this board and others; I have spoken, lobbied and volunteered for and on behalf of lone parents for more than a few years.

Clubman's vulgar comment, picking up on a single word I used in a completely different context, coupled with your link to the newspaper article in question is unpleasant and offensive, it has no relation to the OPs question or any of the responses already posted.

I can only conclude therefore, given the lack of apology from either of you, that it was deliberately intended to be offensive.
