Hi folks,

My dad is due to be made redundant in 2009 at age 56. He has been a PAYE worker for the past 16 years (was self employed prior to this). For the past 4 years he has also worked a second job at nights as a taxi driver, and has filed proper tax returns.

While he still has his taxi licence and plate it looks like he will no longer be able to do the job because of ill health but we are wondering what his options are when he is made redundant from his PAYE job. Will he be able to claim Job Seekers Benefit, or should he claim disability benefit? While he intends to look for another job obviously in this climate and at his age it will not be easy, so we want to be prepared.

Also he has the option after he is made redundant to take early retirement (his pension would be about €140 a week - how would this affect things?)

My mam recently had to leave work to care for her parents so she is receiving the Carers Allowance. They have no dependants but will still have a mortgage of circa €80k after dad is made redundant.

Thanks,

The first decision to be made is whether your dad is fit to work. If so, he can claim Jobseeker's Benefit based on his PRSI conributions (no means-tested). If not fit, he should claim Illness Benefit.

thanks for that, yes he would be fit to work, just not fit to work 2 jobs any more!
