Getting a new porch built today but want to keep draughts etc... to an absolute minimum so we have decided not to put a letter box in the new door. INstead we are looking to source a cube shape letter box on a pole that we can erect at the gate for the postie. Has anyone seen these about in the DIY shops or online perhaps.

Many Thanks in advance

Check your local garden centre. I saw one made from cast iron .... looked beautiful ... it cost about €400 and I would have purchased for installation at my gate but I felt that even with it bolted and concreted in place some wise guy would still have stolen it.

Another idea .... what about the 'An Post' roadside box .... it's a green box on a pvc pole. Contact An Post ... they may be happy to supply one free of charge if it means they only deliver to your gate. Your local postie may also be able to source one for you.

have a metal post box on front wall from alantic homecare. still there after 3 years. We had to put up a patio door as we woke one winter morning to find a flood has come in through our post box on the front door.
Neighbour has free green one inside her wall so postman leans in over the wall to give letters (plus it means they have to go outside their gate to get post, seems very handy). Postman told he loves the boxes as he saves actually entering people's drives and reversing all over the place.

AFAIK An Post do not supply these green boxes anymore. They initially supplied them free and then charged for them but when they were sold out bought no more. It may be possible to source an old one through your postman. The idea was to save time and money by not driving up and down driveways and boreens but when the union opposed them and the Government surrendered they faded out.
