Just ordered 2 books from The Book Depository, paying via PayPal as usual.

After After entering the security code, I got the following message in red on the order acknowledgement page: "The price of this order has been adjusted to reflect applicable taxes in your delivery location"

The cost went down from €45.22 to €41.49, a saving of €3.73.

Can anyone explain this please as I don't remember it happening before?

The vat laws changed in EU today. It’s to do with your local VAT where they sell from and you buy from. The seller remits the Vat as per the rate applicable in the sales country.

tax is based on your location

I know about 1st July changes but didn't think they'd apply to transaction like this that I've done a good few times before. PayPal are Luxembourg based and The Book Depository ship from The Netherlands IIRC to me in Ireland.

You should get a breakdown of the price in the invoice showing any VAT paid if any

It looks like € 41.49 is cost before VAT

VAT of 9% is charged on books in Holland or € 3.73 giving a VAT inclusive price of € 45.22

In Ireland books are zero-rated so no VAT is due. If you were charged VAT before, then that may have been an error
