Hi

I have achieved a ba(hons) Tourism Management in june 2007 , am working since august 07 but am having a lot of problems finding jobs that are not related to selling travel as I want to work within Irish tourism specifically. Im considering doing a masters but am worried that I'll be in the exact same position regarding employment when I finish, having spent all that money and time...

Can anyone please advise as to if the a MA International Tourism would infact benefit my career or am I just putting off working for another twelve months and hoping that the employment situation will be different?

Thanks :)

Not involved in tourism, but know someone who has landed lovely job with a consultancy company which has tourism services as one of it's core competencies. She has a Masters in Tourism studies (Hons).

was the job in dublin? does she have a lot of experience or more qualifications?

No just BBS and Masters and not in Dublin. Like undertaking any postgraduate course its good to be clear on what goals and outcomes you want from the course; the more specific they are the better and you can tweak course modules and projects to make you more employable within a specific sector.

yeah I want to get into Tourism Consultancy I just cant figure out if I would need the masters or would i be better off building up the experience. Where did your friend do the masters and where are they working now?

It would be worthwhile chatting with a number of companies, then you will be able to make better decisions thats what she did. Not appropriate to say where company is located but Smurfit and UL provide taught masters, as you know you can also do the Masters by research, might be worth contacting a number of companies to identify research needs. That will open a few doors.
