Nonsense Wolfie. The people have quite clearly shown that they do not want FF or FG in government, yet you are saying the result shows that they should both go into government together? And you claim that it is arrogant of them not to do so? Jeez you really have your head wired a bit differently!
If FF and FG even suggested a coalition you can be damn sure they would be accused of being arrogant in thinking they have a mandate from the people to go into government!
It is quite obvious that SF won this election (by some distance in terms of 1st preference votes) and therefore the obligation firmly lies with them now to try and form the next government. That is only right and proper as it is what they have earned in the election results. They said it's what they want so let them have a go.
FF are in a really tough position in that it is obvious SF will come to them later with some sort of offer so it will be interesting to watch. But to suggest that the result of this election means a coalition between FG and FF is such a wrong read of the results when it is clear the majority of people are saying they don't want either in government!
 

Wolfie is right and there's no nonsense in what he suggests. FF and FG can form a Grand Coalition if they wish. Between them they have the numbers. But, they might be running scared inasmuch now we have a thinking electorate who won't be taken for granted into the future. I bet FF and FG are more concerned of who will be their respective party leaders next month.
 
FF is in an impossible position and now has no choice but to go in with SF/IRA.
Is "Up the Ra!" their new slogan now that their day has actually come?
 
This election was won by SF on the mantra of lines such as "FF and FG have been in power for the last 100 years, it is time for change". The people agreed with them. Yet somehow you think the results show that it means the people want FF AND FG in power together?
 

24.5 of votes is a very low bar for 'victory'... they came first. There's a difference. Still a lot more people voted for FF\FG as SF.

The momentum is with SF and "anybody but FF/FG". It is right that Mary Lou seeks to form a government without FF/FG.
But once dust settles, in the cold light of day, the electorate has returned a three way block, the votes of all blocks need to be respected.
24% if far from an endorsement of the Irish people.
My view is that a SF coalition of the left with Green/SocDem/PBP and some Indos could be difficult to form, and more difficult to sustain. I could however be wrong.

In the event that such a government is not achievable, then FF and FG need to eat some humble pie one way or other and either seek to form government with SF and other, or a coalition between themselves with other.

Or face another election, with SF standing more candidates.

You can see the longer this plays out that Sinn Fein will become more hysterical that FF and FG go into coalition, the fact that FF did so badly yesterday has turned the tables on Sinn Fein because it has put the ball in their court and significantly diminished any desire by FF to go into coalition.
In any case if Sinn Fein are really serious about coalition they will have to eat alot of humble pie themselves not exactly a SF trait when you see the shenanigans of David Cullinane and Dessie Ellis after the election. They are the most triumphalist of all political parties, skills no doubt honed in the sectarian politics of Northern Ireland
