Possible overcharging for painting job?

A neighbour got the front only of their three-bed pebble dashed house spray painted and window surrounds also painted., plus front garden wall spray painted. A small amount of missing pebble dash on garden wall was replaced before the painting. Also one drainpiep three coats painted. Painter also power washed the pebble dash before painting and powerwashed the garden path also. Was there 7 and half days. Cost €2400 - feels overhcarged. I think it is a bit much too, would welcome any opinions

Did your neighbour not ask for a price up front? The painter I use would probably do that job in 2-3 days and for half the price.

Always get 3 quotes for any significant job you are getting done. ALWAYS agree the price up front.

I'm with lightswitch on this one, they could only have been overcharged if a price was agreed up front. Also, power washing pebble dash prior to painting is not considered a good idea. It drives water into the fabric of the building, applying a waterproof coat over this then seals it in.

i had a guy in cork who did my whole bungalow ( 70 square meters) for 500 euros. He didnt power wash but did two coats of Dulux weathershield.

I had quotes of over 2,000 for the job also.
3 quotes is not enough sometimes in my opinion. This guy was the 5th quote i got.

The only real way to know if you are being screwed or not is

1) if it is a job you can do yourself, estimate how long it would take yourself to do the job and work out the costs from there.

2) if it is not a job you can do yourself, get someone you know to detail what is involved and the likely costs. If you dont know someone, use a forum like this to get approx costs.

Rusty was there any preparation done to your bungalow before he slapped the paint onto it.

I know a few very cheap painters, the reason they are cheap is they don't bother with preparation which is 90% of the job.

My experience of these forums to judge what things cost is a bit well overrated, nobody is goint to see the job in question so how are they supposed to judge.

its been a while since i have been on this foroum,but S.L.F,is still here,giving the best advise,i agree 100% with you.
7 and a half days seems a long time for this job but,i havent seen the house and its very hard too judge something when you havent seen it,always agree a price before a job is started wheather its a friend or not..actually its safer too agree a price if its a friend ,the amount of friends who do jobs for one another and then get a fright with the price is quiet surprising.
