Polished Tiles - Am I mad

Hi All

We are at the finishing stages of our new build at the moment. I am looking at tiles for the hall, kitchen and dining and I love the polished tiles, both porcelain and marble, but I have a few reservations

(1) Slippy - Are they very slippy? I have 2 small kids. Does anybody have any experience i.e. do kids (or indeed adults) tend to slip more?

(2) Maintenance - Am I going to have the mop out a couple of times a day? Some people argue that they are very easy to keep and considering they are in a lot of the shopping centres around the country maybe they have a point

(3) Staining - if sealed properly do they still stain. I suppose I am thinking more of the marble here. When laying marble should the tile be sealed before or after laying i.e. do both sides need to be sealed to prevent the adhesive or grout stainging the tile?

We have polished porcelain tiles in kitchen/breakfast, large hall & DS Loo. Highly recommend on all fronts. We went for dark tiles 600mm square with a fleck through them so that they would not always look dirty. They are brilliant and we only mop once or twice a week.

1. Slippy - We find them great we have two kids circa 2 and 4 years and no problems

2. Mop every day - Not us far too lazy

3. Marble - Can't help we avoided them because of the maintenance issues

We got marble tiles put into our bathroom, they looked fabulous. super shiny...but....maybe we should have got them treated as the builders with their big clompy boots with stones stuck in them destroyed them. Deep scratches etc. Only option was to redo them...and this time we opted for regular floor tiles...
 
We have marble tiles downstairs - ours were sealed after laying. The finish is semi-matt. Not slippy at all.

We're planning on re-sealing at the end of every other summer - probably try to use a buffing machine or something.

The worst thing for "stains" we've found is orange/apple juice - it's acidic so takes the shine off. Tea/wine/beer/coffee have no effect.

We ordered our marble direct from Spain which saved us a fortune. PM me if you want the supplier.

We have polished porcelain....

1) Don't find them slippy.

2) I have cream tiles and I am finding them hard to keep clean and shiney

3) Ours were sealed and we have a walnut kitchen table and one day I moved the kitchen table and I found a stain were the leg of the table was, that won't come out. It's the same colour as the wood on the table. Don't know what caused it the rest of the floor is fine.

It were again I wouldn't put them down but when they're cleaned (almost daily) they look class!

I have cream porcelain with black inserts in my entrance hallway.

I do find them extremely difficult to keep clean from a footprint point of view. That said they are very easy to clean but you do see every mark on them especially when coming in from a damp outdoors.

I had envisaged using them in another room but I have totally gone off the idea. Must admit I am a bit fanatical:eek: about cleaning - or at least that what my husband says :rolleyes:
 
I am looking into getting polished marble tiles in my kitchen and have read various websites about when NOT to use when cleaning marble surfaces.

Can anyone who has polished marble let me know what agents they use to clearn their floor and where can I buy them.

i have cream porecelain and they are fine. very easy to keep clean. we only mop once a month ( no kids)

you should reseal once every 2 years. i think they are a bit hard though and kids would hurt themselves if they fall so when we do have kids i will be changing them (lyno, cos its cheap and they can mess it up)
 
We have polished granite on the floor in kitchen hall and bathrooms. they are a grey flek and dont show the dirt at all, once a week wash is plenty. They are not slippy. Water marks them after a spill but then dries out. This has turned out to be quite useful in our renovation as every small leak is instantly visible, we had some leaks under the floor which were very small and I don't think would have been noticed with ordinary tiles. I have had cream tiles before and decided against them because of the cleaning.
 
We have 600x 600 jupiter beige polished porcelain tiles which are fine. The problem is the grout. It is cream/off white and since we moved last year we cannot keep it clean. Even when washing the tiles the dirty water makes the grout worse. I have tried a steam cleaner and several HG grout cleaners but nothing seems to be any good. Any suggestions? the grout is about 4/5 mm wide. Even though I've since found out that because the tiles were "rectified" that they could have been laid much closer together i.e 2mm wide grout joint. At this stage i am considering raking out the grout but the area is 100 sq yards!

Any suggestion would be appreciated.
