the local council has turned off our water. I checked the tanks in the attic to make sure they had water. I have two tanks and guessing one is the hot water and the other the cold tank.The tanks have water but the one i reckon is the hot water has a lot of silver bits which i reckon is limescale. Is there anything i can put into the tank to get rid of the limescale and descale the pipes.

Is it a big tank and small tank?

Big one for plumbing, cold and hot.

Small one for heating.

Which one is the limescale in?

A good idea for DIY'ers is to empty and clean both tanks once yearly.
 
One is slightly smaller then the other, the small one has like a over flow copper pipe and it has the limescale. The area does have a problem with limescale.
 
Just had a better look , on the top of the heating tank there is a residue of gray/silver not that much. There is also some white spots. There is a problem with limescale in the area and i want to prevent any problems. I had to change the heating element in the gas boiler already due to a limescale build up. There is also a copper overflow pipe in the top of the tank.

My small tank for heating hasn't been cleaned or emptied since the house was built 25 years ago. How can it be emptied ? Is it a case of draining all the water from the heating system ?
 
There is a compound i can put into the heating system for limescale ,dont know the name ,has anybody used such a compound.

You don't want to drain the whole system down though, just enough so it is below the point you want to work on, so drain about 10 gallons. It will make refilling it after much easier.

Inhibitor?. the small tank fills your heating system. By the sounds of it you have no leaks of any size. That water remains stagnate for months or even years, expect to see some type of residue on it. the silver white residue you see may be from soldier in the pipe work.

I won't think you have any need for major concern.

The system is fine ,i just want to make sure its running at its most efficient. I am guessing that there is a limescale build up but its only minimum.The soldier from the pipes makes sense. I have looked in B&Q they have a descaler and a separate inhibitor for around 60 euro and its not much bother to apply. Thanks again.
