Am going back to college to do a plc course in 2 weeks time. was on disability for past 2 years due to a car accident.
iI applied for a student grant as a mature student but was refused it as i already was in college in 1999.

What other options is there out there or incentive for me to help financially with going back to college to retrain for something else. As the job that i was working at before the crash, i cannot do that job anymore due to crash
Any help please.
Thank you

Depending on where you are taking your course -

my experience is that students can apply to the Co Dublin VEC, Tallaght, PLC Grant Section, for a PLC grant, which roughly amounts to around 135E per month paid directly into your bank account. If there are special circumstances you may qualify for an extra amount, up to around 180E pm. I can't say if this is the same with local VECs in all areas but you can check.

Income should be under c38K pa to qualify for a 100% grant, which reduces according to income up to max earnings of c48K pa.

Ask them to send you out an application form - in the case of Tallaght they only take calls on this subject between around 10.30 and 12.30 Mon/Friday.

If you have a medical card there is a good chance that you will qualify. Good luck in your course.

busyman, thanks for getting back to me. but my disability benifit is now changed to "back to education allowance, so i have got that and still keep my medical card also but it a bit hard to go to college and travel 60 miles per day approx on 185€, and not be getting any other help.

You could apply for the Back To Education Allowance. http://www.welfare.ie/publications/sw70.html. Go to your local Social Welfare Office and apply straight away.

Good luck.

miselemeas, im from the galway area and i applied for a plc grant through my local vec and was refused it due to me being in college in 1999. im not sure where to turn now as im a mature student and will find it very hard to try cope with college full time on €185 per week.
thank you for your help

Try your local Partnership (every area has one I think) as they administer the Millenium Fund, which is a source of financial support for FE/Third Level edcuation for those meeting certain criteria.
