Yes.
or if playstation 3 will play on them
I don't think that PS2s can play PS3 games but the opposite should work as far as I know.

Maybe ask him which one he wants and then decide if you want to get it for him? Google for more info on (in)compatibility info?

You are probably getting of getting a PS3 to be honest, I believe they have stopped making games for the PS1 and possibly soon to be, PS2.

PS3 is the way forward (depending on the age of the child...) you are still probably better of paying the extra.. check out Buy and Sell for second hands ones..

If I am correct the latest Playstation 3 (40GB) will not play games for Playstation 2, so you are stuck with Playstation 3 games, which are a lot more expensive.

But I would check with your son first, as it's a lot more expensive in real terms if you buy a Playstation 2 and he never uses it because all his friends have PS3s. And I expect he will want to swap and borrow games from friends as well, so whatever machines they have may be important in the purchase decision.

Best of luck with it...

Spot on. The original 60GB PS3's were backwards compatible with PS2 games. Not so with the newer ones although it is rumoured that a forthcoming 80Gb version will!!!

80GB (not Gb for the pedantic ) version was launched in the US/Korea last August includes software emulation to support PS2 games. The earlier models had hardware support with full compatability, the software emulation only supports [broken link removed] of PS2 titles.

I'd reckon you'd have to go with the PS3 unless the cost is an important factor.
Although for unrivaled fun the wii is a great console for old and young alike!

The PS2 games market is still much bigger than the PS3 market. I'd stick with a PS2 unless the son is insisting on a PS3, or you plan to use the Blu Ray drive. PS3 is a waste of money if he won't be taking advantage of it.

Why have you ruled out a Wii or an XBox 360?

Be wary that even tho your son wants a PlayStation now, if most of his friends have an X-Box 360, he may very soon wish he'd got an X-Box too (they can play the same games together on-line, but a PS cannot communicate with x-boxes). Saw it recently, kid ended up trading in his nearly new PS3 for an X-Box for that reason.

PS3 can play online too and is probably the better bet against the xbox, but if he is young then the wii might suit best, and luckily its cheaper too.
