folks,

looking at getting a new TV .. maybe a 40" .. just looking through all the offers, whats the difference between a plasma and a LCD ? any one have a recommendation ?

Cheers,

I recommend the Samsung LE40M87BD 40in LCD TV,

This LCD is "Full HD 1080P" people get confused but but older LCD's where HD ready 1080i,Won't bore you with he tech stuff. But full HD IS Good as it gets for now.Even tho you prob wont benefit from it for now.Unless you have sky HD or Bluray.

But the Samsung LE40M87BD Has 3 HDMI v1.3 ports which is loads,Built in freeview tuner so if your along border counties you might be able to pick up feee view!!

Sharp picture,Good Blacks and like i said full HD 1080P,

Really Good LCD we have three true out the house!!

Regards AV TEC .

I've somehow ended up with three LCD TVs of varying size and weirdly enough the cheapest and least recommended of them, the Nordmende, is by some distance the best - the quality and sharpness of the picture is excellent. (Infuriating remote control, though).

The most recommended brand when I did my research was Samsung, I read nothing but good things about their TVs - but my one is bloody awful! Grainy picture, dull colours, etc, etc, hugely disappointed with it.

The other one is a Philips and I'm more than happy with it, even though I've never been a great Philips fan in the past. If you have plenty of money to spend I'm certain you can do better than a Philips, but if you're on a budget then it'll do the job.

Hey Blueberry08,

Don't Blame the TV,your samsung's poor picture quality,I'd advise you to calabrate your samsung. You can get a dvd disc which has all the test patterens you need to calabrate your TV.

Any idea where you get this disc?
I have a samsung and i'm quite happy, but the colour can be off a wee bit sometimes

Yh Mik,

Ebay should have sum.But saying that can't see any decent ones.

I would recommend Toshiba. The Regza series (which now includes full HD and 100 Hz models) received excellent reviews. I have the C Series which, although now surpassed by newer models, produces a much better picture than anything I have ever seen from Samsung.

the lcd v plasma debate has changed around quite a bit. Plasma's used to be plagued by 'burning out', but these seem to be solved. I recently was in a similar position and found a definite winnner in this debate. It was the Pioneer Kuro, but it was also 2,500 for a 42inch (plasma). Being too expensive, I went through all the reviews and ended up buying the Sony V3000 (40 in LCD), its quite a set, I got it for €1800 with a free PS3 and €160 worth of free vouchers from DID electrical.

As for the full HD debate, its like anything you buy nowadays, its the latest technology but is only worth it, if you like watching alot of movies (on Blu-ray/ HD-DVD), like high definition gaming (PS3 and Xbox) or have Sky HD. If you are only buying a tv to watch NTL and watch DVD's full HD will have zero effect, so basically you dont need it.
