Planting a hedge to the front of an existing house.

Hi,

I have looked over the posts relating to planting hedges and they all seem to be relating to new builds. Our house was built about 60 years ago. There are hedges either side between our house and our neighbours; these are about 2.5 meters tall, maybe a bit taller. We have a wall to the front of the house which is just under the 1.2 meter allowed without planning permission.

I understand that to build a wall taller than 1.2 meters I need to apply for planning permission. We decided to plant a hedge to the front of the house, which over time would grow and be maintained at the same height as the existing hedge to the side of the house. We’ve looked on the planning websites and on Teagasc’s website but have been unable to find any reference to hedging.

We had originally thought of building the wall up as well as planting the trees. My husband called the local Planning Office (Portlaoise), to check the height we could build the wall to without applying for planning and they explained the 1.2 meters and planning application process to him. As it seemed quite complicated to him the way it was being explained (they were talking about exemptions, form 5, contracting an engineer…..) my husband said to them that maybe we’d be better off leaving the wall the way it was and just planning the trees. Then they told him that if the hedge was being planted to the front of the house and was going to grow higher than 1.2 meters we would need to apply for planning permission!

My understanding is that we could build a fence to the side of the house (coming from each side of the house to the borders between our house and the neighbours on either side up to 2 meters.

My question is, does anyone know for sure if we need planning permission to plant a hedge to the front of the house, or know where we can find accurate information, please?

Many thanks for any info.
