Planting a few plants/shrubs this time of year

I have a few areas of my garden that were prepared for plants/shrubs but never got round to planting them over the summer.

Would like to do it now.
Its relatively small areas, so is this a bad time to plant with the cold snap starting?

Is there any types that would suit to plant this time of year, or are there any I should definitely avoid?

It's a good time for planting bare-rooted plants. Plants in pots can be planted out any time of year. Of course it all depends on species. There should be a label on them if you got them from a garden centre giving planting info. If a plant comes from a warm climate it shouldn't be planted out this time of year. Plants from more northerly climates should be ok.

A basic rule of thumb is anything that loses its leaves, its a good time to plant now while the plant is dormant - others, read the label
