Planning a kitchen - what to do first?

Want to redo our kitchen bit by bit (dont have the cash to splash out in one go). It should be do-able as we currently dont have a fitted kitchen as its an old house and we dont want to replace it with a standard fitted kitchen, even a traditional styled fitted kitchen wont really do, would ruin the overall look of the house.

We have lost of ideas for different corners of the room but what is preventing me from taking action is not knowing at what stage should we be doing the floor. Before we start the kitchen or wait until the end.

it will prob be a laminate wood effect floor or an engineered wooden floor that clicks together for easy installation.....should we install the floor first or wait until we put in the rest of it?

has anyone any experience/recommendations either way?

If you are going to using free-standing units and applicances, I think that
the floor has to go down first.

What sort of sub-floor do you have - concrete, or old floor boards ?
Is it flat enough to put applicances and units straight onto.

I think that putting the floor down last only works with a completely
fitted kitchen.

If you put the floor down, everything sits on the same floor and and small gaps between units will have the same floor.

If you put the units and applicances in first, the flooring will have to abut to the front of all the different units and appliances and I dont think it will look good, and will take away from the style of kitchen which you are describing

The under floor is old floor boards and its fairly straight and even giving its age.

I just find it hard to picture laminate looking right with an old style kitchen. It just looks too perfect. I imagine a country tile of some sort would fit what you describe better.

Just make sure the sink and dishwasher are where they are supposed to be before you put down your floor as otherwise you might have to pull up floors in the future to move pipes around.

I agree mommah but funds wont stretch that far, hence why we are doing this bit by bit. We have put a similar floor down in other parts of the house with great success and friends and family whoose opinion we can rely on have commented that it looks very authentic and fitting, so fingersX......
