Having major problems dealing with Philips and their service agents in Ireland trying to get a tv repaired under warranty. At this stage I just want a refund. Any suggestions on what to buy to replace, assuming the refund will be forthcoming after all the hassle. Budget €1000.00.

Go Panasonic,you can not go far wrong with them.
Richer Sounds are giving a good deal on a 42" at the moment at €970.00.

Future proof your purchase by going for Full HD, 100Hz motion for amazingly clear sports images. You may need to add a couple of hundred euro. I would recommend the ZF series from Toshiba or the A6 series from Samsung. The ZF has the best spec of any LCD TV currently on the market.
