Philanthropy - Is there an Irish-based forum

Hey there,

I have been wondering about this for a while.

I have been speaking to a number of young professional friends and some were thinking about returning to eduication to study something that they believe would give them a more meaningful career. Medicine is often the top of the list but there are others.

Considering that returning to college having already completed one degree would be very expensive (fees, living expenses, no government funding for fees and the grant if anyone remembers being a joke) are there individual Philanthropists or organisations in Ireland who are willing to fund things like this. The recipiant would obviously commit to certain causes, commitments or charitable organisations.

Is this a pipedream or surely there must be some people interested in this form of giving back. An investment of 5-7 years in a persons education for a lifetime of positive contribution?

Not trying to be overly corny but I like that idea.

Not a good pitch - seeing as you mispelled Education..

"Hi
Does anyone know what the CGT or Stamp duty implications on the following senario.

I live in a house in
Dublin but my brother is giving me a free site to build an hour away. I want to keep my house in Dublin to rent it out long term. I have been living in this house for 7 years and its worth about 2.5 times what I paid for it. I am planning a rough timeframe of about 4/5 years to move to new build.
Will there be tax implications on getting free site?
Will there be tax implications on keeping my old house?

Thanks"

Not so hot yourself eh Ceatharlach? Yeah should really have checked out my spelling!

And "recipient".

As a donor or as a beneficiary?

At this point I`d only know beneficiaries but the idea of being part of an organization which does this going forward isn’t a bad plan I think anyway.

Are you aware of any groups which accept such individual applications. I know that there are some which accept only from registered charities etc.

Give us an idea of what careers you are in now

You could have a look at Irish aid, if overseas aid would be your thing (Corn warning - "see the world and do good").

They are recruiting now for UN internships among other things.

It is likely that an aid agency would be interested in your current skills (languages, administration, IT, some financial ability etc.). As Capall says, if you give an idea of your current skills, you might get more directed advice.

As an aside, there is a career to be had in this sort of public service. Efficient administrators are key to the success of aid and development programs. If you really want to walk a different path, I would recommend these options as first steps (should there have been a corn warning there too?).

Alternatively, there are many volunteer organisations in Ireland that would appreciate your time and effort.

Corporate responsibility is a bit of a buzz word today, many large companies have schemes to encourage staff to give something back to society.

Maybe your friends don't need to look at doing another degree with all the associated expense, just be creative and set something up in their own organisation or in their own time. Business in the Community is worth looking at for information.

Volunteeringireland.ie is a great information base for other voluntary organisations look for support, many offer training to volunteers.
