what puzzles me as a person with limited knowledge of the law is the usual scenario when a person is found dead in suspicious circumstances Garda await results of post mortem following which they will decide if they will treat the death as murder. Maybe a person is arrested for questioning in regard to the murder BUT subsequently may be charged with a different offence. Is it legally correct to mention that the person was held re a murder investigation or would it be more correct to say that the person was held relating to the death of the person.

When a person is arrested and brought to a station the record is completed. So if the police record that he/she was arrested on suspicion of murder then that is what should be said. If subsequently there is a charge of manslaughter or serious assault this is usally on the instruction of the DPP
