Hi,

My mum receives a retired teachers pension, in 2010 she discovered she was also entitled to a small state pension of 47 euro a week. They backdated her pension from once she was eligible. Roll on last November she received a letter from social protection to say she hadn't being paying paye on her state pension and she owed 2000 euro. She naively thought that she was automatically being deducted any tax she was due.

She has made contact and they said she could make the payments in smaller amounts and they would get back to her. She received a letter this morning to say she must pay the money in full in 30 days.

My dad is not in receipt of any income as he is below retirement age and doesn't qualify for any social welfare since he finished work 6 years ago.

They really can't afford this right now, has she any options?

Let me know if you require anymore detail.

Thanks

Sorry I meant to add that her pension levy also increased from 90 per fortnight to 200 so she thought this was the payments being deducted.

She is 74 and the whole thing is really stressful.

Very difficult to comment meaningfully in the absence of figures. Is their combined income below €36k p.a.? If so they should be exempt from income tax & marginal exemption may apply for income just above this level.

Her pension is 44148 per annum. which works out at 1241 per fortnight net
She received a state pension of 2641 per annum.
Dad is not in receipt of any payment. We are still not sure if he has enough contributions for a state pension. He was self-employed for many years.
