Paying a solicitor - how much should be upfront and when should the balance be paid?

Hi

Im looking for some advice on this. A solicitor Ive agreed to use is looking for 50% of the fee now and the balance in 30 days. Is this normal? The matter could go on for a few months and I thought the balance would be paid when the case has been resolved.

I would agree that the balance be paid at the end, but in addition that while it goes on you pay any 'legal costs' particularly if you are a new client.
