Hi,
Am at the end of my tether trying to claim tax relief on medical expenses for 2021, 2020 and 2019. I am a PAYE worker so don't use My Account often. No matter how I try I can't find how to do this on My Accounts. I used to fill a paper form before but you have to do it online now. Any instructions I get lead to nothing. No useful help from My enquiries, again all suggestions lead to zero. I am not stupid but I am really struggling to figure out how to do this. (I would love there to be a tab that says 'Claiming tax relief on medical expenses retrospectively' is that too much to ask?)
Hoping there is something obvious I am missing.
Thanks

Posting the indetical message three times in a row will not help - in fact, it will probably put people off

Review your tax 2018-2021 > Select the relevant year > Income tax return > Amend > Start > Personal Details > Next > PAYE Income > Next > Non-PAYE Income > Next > Tax Credits & Reliefs > You And Your Family (I think) > Medical Expenses Relief

It's very simple as it's part of completing your tax return via MyAccount. You'll have to complete a separate return for each year. The links below will assist. There's even some videos in the links. Just takes a few minutes.

From the first link:

To claim relief and complete an IT return for 2019 and subsequent years, please follow these steps:

sign into myAccount
click on ‘Review your tax’ link in PAYE Services
request a Statement of Liability
click on ‘Complete Income Tax Return’
in the ‘Tax Credits & Reliefs’ page select ‘Health’ and ‘Health Expenses’
complete and submit the form.

I already gave the exact "breadcrumb" trail through the myAccount PAYE filing "wizard".

To Jpd.20
I didn't post three times on purpose.
I had problems using my phone. I left it a few weeks and tried again. I had no problem doing 2019 but had problems doing 2020. Got there in the end. Got the refund very fast.

To clubman.
I have done this but don't get the 'amend' option. It says 'i or my spouse (not relevant) are something or other' and I cant do that so not possible to do this as expected. MY enquiries to My account are no help.

Is it saying you or your spouse were income tax registered?

To Relax, Carry on,
Love the name.
When I click on 'request statement of liability' it says 'it is not possible because I was registered for tax ( or some such) in that year'.
So what next?
My Enquiries are no help.

You can't file using MyAccount for that/those years because you have an active income tax registration. You need to file form 11s via ROS or have the income tax registration ceased to a date prior to the years you are trying deal with. You must have been registered as a chargeable person (form 11 filer) at some point and it's never been ceased. Did you have some source of non PAYE income/were a proprietary director in the past?

To Relax carry on,
I have a UK pension now since 2018 which I declare on My Account and which is taxed etc. since then. I can enter my pension amount plus my paye salary (automatically entered each year) and current years medical expenses (live) (prefer to enter retrospectively so don't have to upload receipts, such a pain).
I tried ROS Form 11today with no luck, hence frustration. As I said, at end of my tether. Might just forgo the €280 tax refund . What a palaver! As I approach my retirement I despair of being able to claim any ordinary reliefs without a tax consultant which, with the amounts being claimed, is hardly worth it.

I still do the paper form. Did it for 2021. I hope it hasn't changed for 2022?
The paper form has been gone for years and shouldn't be processed any longer unless you have no access to broadband or can't file due to age mental or physical disability. Not sure if you fall into that criteria or you just got lucky.

Is this correct or your take on it?
It's the official line. Paper Med 1s are gone for years so in order to claim relief for health expenses, they are claimed via a tax return. A form 11 for chargeable persons via ROS or a tax return (electronic version of a form 12) via MyAccount. Paper form 12s and paper form 11s are still accepted in limited circumstances but the vast bulk are filed online.

It might be a case that the numbers are so low they just process.
