PAYE tax credit - should I claim it

Hi.
Both myself and my wife are PAYE workers. I'm completing my 2011 tax returns on ROS. Under the personal tax credits section there is the PAYE tax credit subsection. There is a single question to answer in this section:

PAYE Tax Credit, tick the box if claimed Self [] Spouse[]

Should I tick this or not? I've never been sure what this meant. In past years I've left this blank because I thought it would all have been handled through payroll and by ticking the boxes I was somehow claiming again (sort of taking it twice) but now I'm not so sure. Can someone explain what the consequence is of ticking these boxes and should I tick them for myself and spouse?

Also, if I should have ticked them in previous years and didn't can I get a rebate?

thanks

Tick away
request P21s for the last 4 years and see if you were both given the credit

odds are that you were given that you are paye workers - but you can claim back 4 years for all credits
